Figuring Out Twitch

ffxiv_02242016_175543.png

Since I rushed home from work, I was able to get about an hour and a half of Final Fantasy XIV in before the servers went down for maintenance. Three members of my Free Company and I unlocked The Lost City of Amdapor (Hard) and went in blind. I highly recommend going into any dungeon blind WITH FRIENDS or other people who are interested in figuring out mechanics on their own. DO NOT DO THIS if you’re using the Duty/Raid Finder, especially if the content is more than a few weeks old. (You could totally get away with it right now since the content is still brand-spanking new, though.) The four of us were chatting on Discord, figuring out stuff as we went along, calling out stuff we noticed, etc. It really adds an extra element of fun when you have to figure stuff out on your own. It also promotes teamwork and communication. You know, those real life skills that are useful in jobs and stuff. 😛

Light Party Dungeons are 4-man dungeons and have a time limit of 90 minutes. I think there were about 20 minutes left on the clock when we finished. Not bad! And we only wiped once on the very first boss. There were some hairy moments on the other bosses, but we were able to learn and adapt quickly enough to keep from dying. I was actually really worried about the last boss because historically, whenever we’ve had to learn a new dungeon, we usually wipe over and over on the last boss. We’ve actually FAILED dungeons multiple times because of this. Other times, we’ve won with literally just a few SECONDS to spare. We cheer really loudly when that happens… Haha! We have a lot of fun.

ffxiv_02242016_181349

I’m not entirely sure WHY, but I really like these floating octopus-looking enemies in that dungeon. They’re beautiful in a dark way to me. Yeah, I’m weird. I liked the sparkly butterflies, too. Hoping to attack The Antitower tonight! Calcabrena!

I didn’t Twitch my adventures last night. I wish I had, especially since we had such a fun time! But I’m trying to figure out a good plan. So far I’ve just been streaming whatever whenever. I’ve been TRYING to stick to a schedule, but I’ve been pretty shitty at it. I want to change that. I want my channel to be a fun place that people want to visit. It excites me when I meet new people who love games as much as or more than I do. So I want to figure out a plan and a schedule. Here’s a list of what I’m working with:

  1. I want to stream every day.
  2. I want to stream Final Fantasy XIV.
  3. I want to stream new games as I get them.
  4. I want to stream my backlog, provided it’s on a streamable platform.
  5. Speaking of platforms… My streaming options are currently only PC, PS4, and XBOX One.
  6. My husband is my #1 moderator.
  7. My husband is willing to help out with other stuff at home to let me do this.
  8. I have an awesome follower who bugs me when I don’t stream. (Arciela, PLEASE keep doing that!)
  9. Available stream times: M-Th – 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM, Fri – 8 PM – 11 PM, Sat – 4 PM – 11 PM, Sun – 12:00 PM – 10 PM (HST)

Since Final Fantasy XIV is a MMORPG, regular play is a necessity. Not to mention, I just love playing that game. Since the majority of my FC (guild) is on the mainland, the earlier I play that game during the day the better. On some days, I’ll probably need to spend more time on FFXIV because of weekly cap goals. Other days, I’ll be able to just log on, do a few daily things, and then log off to play something else. Given all this, here’s my new proposed schedule:

(Note: This is a work in progress and I will continue to tweak it until I’m happy with it.)

  • Sunday – Free between Noon and 10 PM (with regular breaks) – dependent on Free Company plans
  • Monday – 5:30 PM – 7: 30 PM – FFXIV; 8:30 PM – 10: 30 PM – Other Games
  • Tuesday – 5:30 PM – 10:30 PM (with a dinner break in there) – FFXIV
  • Wednesday – 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM – FFXIV; 8:30 PM – 10:30 PM – Other Games
  • Thursday – 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM – FFXIV; 8:30 PM – 10:30 PM – Other Games
  • Friday – 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM – Whatever I’m in the Mood For
  • Saturday – 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM – FFXIV; 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM – FFXIV or Other Games (dependent on Free Company plans)

In case you’re wondering why I’m working so hard on this, the answer is simple. This is something I REALLY REALLY want to do. The only people I’ve ever seen who love games as much as I do are the people who stream on Twitch and make YouTube videos. Or people who work in the video game industry like game journalists and game developers. When I thought about which of those things sounded like the most fun, streaming definitely came out on top. Plus I haven’t seen a whole lot of women streamers in their 40’s, so I thought it might be nice to represent that demographic. Not all moms just play Disney’s Tsum Tsum and Neko Atsume on our cellphones, after all. 😉 I do play those, too, though… CAN’T RESIST THE CUTE.

Anyway, I hope you join me. 🙂

Today in Game/Nerd News:

Harebrained Schemes’ Necropolis got delayed until Summer. BUT! They’re working with Bandai Namco to also release on PS4 and XBOX One! Excellent! I’m still planning on picking it up for my PC since it’s got full controller support. It was designed with controller in mind, from what I was told. I love that this game will have multiplayer, too.

There are new Pokemon logos. I’m sure we’ll hear all about them in the Nintendo Direct that’s happening at 5 AM (HST) tomorrow morning. I’ll still be sleeping, thank you very much.

Tonight on Twitch:

According to my new and improved schedule, I SHOULD be playing FFXIV from 5:30 to 7:30 and then switching to Bloodborne after I eat dinner. HOWEVER, I’m going to start my new schedule on Sunday. Tonight, I’ll be logging onto FFXIV after dinner. Probably around 6:30 or 7. And that’s what I’ll be playing until I go to bed. There’s a lot of new content and I need to unlock it all. It’s going to take me a long time to actually DO it all, but I at least want to have it available.

Stop by and say hi!

QQ

I’m warning you now. This is going to be a rant-y post.

Yesterday marked the release of a highly anticipated content patch in Final Fantasy XIV Online. Patch 3.2 adds more story quests, more side quests, 2 new dungeons, a new 8 man raid and its savage (hardcore) version, a new trial and its extreme version, a shit ton of new gear and crafting recipes, the mentor system, a new pvp arena, a newbie training hall, various quality of life improvements, and more. Seriously, this patch is HUGE.

So far I’ve been able to enjoy this new content for exactly ONE HOUR last night before the server went down for emergency maintenance. And the server is going to be down AGAIN tonight for 5 hours during MY prime time. Servers will be back online JUST IN TIME for Japan’s prime time. This is one of the things I HATE about living in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. We always get screwed on maintenance days. This used to happen ALL THE TIME when I played World of Warcraft.

To be honest, I expected server problems. When a patch is THIS big, it’s bound to have major problems. It happens every time. I’m still really salty, though. Other members in my Free Company have had the opportunity to try out all kinds of new shit. I barely got started on the main story quests because it took me a minute just to get my bearings and figure out what the hell I should be doing first.

Tonight I should have enough time to play for about an hour and a half if I get my ass home from work as quickly as possible. Then I’ll eat dinner and stream Bloodborne on my Twitch channel.

Today’s News:

Facebook added new reactions in addition to the “Like” button. I’m actually pretty okay with that. Sometimes I want to like something multiple times just because I love it so much. Or sometimes things make me sad or angry. Being able to express that is nice. But here’s the thing that’s pissing me off. People keep making comments about the fact that they’re missing certain reactions that would be really useful. The Oatmeal has a great Facebook post about it. (Sorry, I can’t figure out how to link to a specific picture post.) Don’t get me wrong. I laughed. I know it’s a joke. And part of me agrees, but too many offhand comments saying the same thing indicates to me that people kind of want these other faces.

What makes you think that you’d be comfortable reacting to your friends’ statuses with a reaction face that meant something along the lines of, “You’re an idiot”? You’re not ballsy enough to actually COMMENT on someone’s status that they’re an idiot or that you’d unfriend them if they weren’t related to you. Do you really think that these little faces will create enough of a disconnect for you to behave like an absolute fucking twat to people who are supposedly your FRIENDS? And even if they’re NOT really  your friends and you’re just friends with them on Facebook for other reasons, when is it EVER okay to behave like a complete douchebag to another human being just because you don’t like what they say? Do you want your friends to do this to you? Do you even CARE about ANY of the relationships in your life? There’s a piece of advice for first dates that I think is really useful. Watch how your date treats other people like your restaurant server or the person selling you your movie popcorn. If they’re willing to treat strangers like crap, they’re not a good catch. I don’t care how much money they have or how good looking they are. Do YOU want to be that shitty asshole of a date? Do YOU want people around you to see how you mistreat other human beings? I want to be better than that. Don’t you?

I’m not interested in any of the free PS Plus games for March.

There’s a new trailer for Dark Souls III. I’m looking forward to this game a lot. 🙂 It’s coming out right before my birthday. Present to myself!

Production I.G. is remaking FLCL. I don’t know that it needs a remake, to be honest. My guess is that they’re trying to get a new generation of fans into it. That anime was excellent. Even though I don’t think we need a remake, I’ll probably watch it anyway.

Did I mention that I forgot my Walkman at home today, too? At least I have Amazon Music, Google Music, and YouTube… /sigh

Hopefully I’ll get into a better mood tonight while playing games. 🙂 That always works.

SLEEP

ffxiv_pcw26001_1280x1024

Sometimes life catches up to me and all I want to do is sleep. Yesterday I got home from work a little after 5 pm and I was out for the count by 6. I completely missed dinner and streaming, but I slept for almost 7 hours. When I got up at around 1 am, I was hungry, so I scrounged around the kitchen, found an energy bar, and ate that before trying to go back to sleep. I knew that Final Fantasy XIV was back up after maintenance, but I resisted going to my computer because I knew that if I sat down in front of that game, I wouldn’t go back to sleep at all. So I perused the full patch notes (OMG SO.MUCH.STUFF!) while lounging in my bed and played a stupid number of solitaire games. (I have a really weird obsession with and addiction to solitaire.) I finally went back to sleep at around 4:30 am, so when I had to get up at 6:30, I did NOT want to get out of bed. Ugh. Oh well. At least I can’t complain about not getting enough sleep, right?

Today’s Cool Game/Nerd Things:

Microsoft announced the March Games with Gold. For once, there’s actually more than one game I’d play! In fact, the only game I’m NOT interested in here is Supreme Commander 2 because that just isn’t my kind of game. I know the Sherlock Holmes game was given for free from PS Plus a while back, but I missed it, so I’m happy to get it here.

There is a sequel to Hentai Kamen coming out in Japan in May. Something is stealing the worlds’ panties and it’s up to this perverted superhero to save the day. I loved the first one; it was SO FUCKING FUNNY. Basically, this guy turns into a fishnet stocking clad superhero when he puts panties on his face. His special attacks utilize his exaggerated pelvic bulge. It is absolutely ridiculous. (The only crappy part about the first movie was that the last 1/3 or so was trying to be all serious and shit. It should have just stayed slapstick the whole way through, in my opinion.) And as so many people commented on Kotaku’s post about it… DAT ASS. 😀

There’s a really interesting article about using sound and music to possibly combat motion sickness in VR. As someone who has a very hard time playing games like first person shooters or any game that has a lot of sudden or exaggerated camera movements, I’m really intrigued by this stuff. I really want to play with VR, but I’m not sure I’ll be ABLE to.

Tonight on Twitch:

I’ll be getting a late start (~8 pm Hawaii time) because I have to go to my second job tonight, but unless the FFXIV servers go down for emergency maintenance, I will be streaming that. I’m dying to try out the new content in the new patch! Come by and say hi!

Finally Working on Bloodborne in Earnest

Cbzf5zTVIAAFgVL

I have tried to make headway on Bloodborne several times in the past. Everyone kept telling me, “Just get to the first boss. Then you’ll get insight and everything will be so much better!” Problem was that I just COULDN’T get to the fucking boss.

UNTIL LAST NIGHT.

It was my first time streaming Bloodborne on Twitch and I wasn’t sure what kinds of viewers I would attract. I wanted to stream something more fun to watch than what I’m currently playing on PC (Shadowrun: Hong Kong). Not that SRHK is a bad game or anything. It’s actually REALLY GOOD! It’s just not something you’d want to watch someone play. It’s a very text heavy game and the action is all turn-based. (I really wish there was a way to make it more fun to watch. It’s SO GOOD. And I’m not even a fan of tactical combat…)

Anyway, the problem with Bloodborne is that I’m REALLY bad at it. I know it’s supposed to be hard, but I couldn’t even get past the first level! When I’m really bad at a game, I’m always VERY hesitant to play it in public because I don’t like being insulted just because I’m not as skilled as others. I mean, seriously, who the fuck just walks up to someone performing an instrument or doing some other thing and just says, “Man, you suck.” It’s like booing at people. As far as I’m concerned, that’s disrespectful and just BAD FORM.

I got some really  helpful people in my Twitch channel and they helped me out. They explained how stuff works, told me where to go, and even tried to join my game, although I ended up with complete strangers instead. Apparently, during the first boss fight, I looked REALLY stressed, according to one viewer… LOL Yeah, I was chanting in my head, “Don’t die. Don’t die. Don’t die.” I got to the second boss and was able to spend Blood Echoes to level up a few times. One guy even got on Party Chat with me to help me out. He told me where I could find the nifty outfit I’m wearing at the top of this post. I love my top hat! I previously looked like this:

CbzMejmUcAA4-aW

I have to say that even though I’ve had a few inappropriate and obscene visitors to my channel, overall, I’m really enjoying meeting people on Twitch. It’s so great to be able to talk to other people who love games, too! I’m making friends and it’s awesome.

Tonight on Twitch:

More Bloodborne, but I may play offline in order to REALLY learn how combat and all that stuff works. When I’m running around frantically, following other players, I get really stressed out and have no idea what I’m doing. If I’m going to “git gud,” I need to really focus on learning the controls.

Gaming/Nerd Stuff I Care About:

The price for the HTC Vive VR was announced yesterday. It’s going to be $800, which is $200 more than the Oculus Rift. I’m hoping that Sony will announce their price for the Playstation VR soon. People are speculating about who’s going to “win” the VR race. Honestly, I’m beginning to think that NO ONE is going to win if the prices for these headsets remain so prohibitively high. As someone who figures out a way to budget for EVERY console and whatever game I want, I don’t personally have a problem with the high prices. HOWEVER, my dollars are not going to make or break VR. In order to really succeed, VR needs to be accessible to the general public, not just to video game and technology hobbyists. If Sony figures out a way to keep their hardware price lower than the other two, they certainly have a chance to dominate. The global install base for the PS4 is currently at around 25 million units. The Oculus Rift and Vive require a powerful gaming PC, but I don’t know if there’s a way to determine the install base for that. I know there are more gaming PC’s than PS4’s, but I don’t know how many are powerful enough to handle VR graphics. In any case, I’m excited for VR. Every time I talk to my son on the phone, he can’t stop talking about his VR class where he’s building levels in Unity, etc. He always says, “OMG Mom, I really wish you could try this! You would LOVE it!” (Parenting win!) I just hope VR doesn’t fizzle out because no one can afford it!

Related to VR, Valve has released a free tool to test your PC to see if it can handle VR. I’m on my lunch break at work right now, so I won’t be able to test my home computer until later tonight.

This is a great piece from Polygon about Golem, a title coming to Playstation VR. They make interesting points about optimization for the PS4 platform as well as addressing motion sickness.

Pre-order and Early Access go live for the remake of Master of Orion on February 26th. $50 gets you the new game, the originals, a soundtrack, early access, and a digital artbook. I’m definitely picking this up!

Mistwalker and Silicon Studio are working on a game together. This is a match made in heaven. In case you’re unfamiliar, Mistwalker is Hironobu Sakaguchi’s company. He’s the guy who created Final Fantasy and continued to work on the Final Fantasy series in some way through Final Fantasy XII. (By this time, however, he was just a producer and not very involved in actual development.) My favorite Mistwalker game is Lost Odyssey. Silicon Studio is the developer behind Bravely Default, which many people consider to be a spiritual successor to the Final Fantasy series. I loved Bravely Default and can’t wait for the sequel to be released in the US later this year. So putting these two teams together = WIN as far as I’m concerned.

IBM in Japan is working on a VRMMO based on the hit anime Sword Art Online. Based on what happened in the show, this seems dangerous.. Just kidding! This looks pretty cool! I really need to go back to studying Japanese. I barely ever use it or even hear it these days and my ability to play Japanese games is decreasing dramatically… 😦

Black & Gold Nails

20160221_154747

It’s been a LONG time since I posted my latest manicure. I have the best nail artist. People are always surprised at the fact that I love bling on my nails. I’m not exactly a blingy person, you know?

In other news, I created my Backlog of Shame. It’s a list of all the games I want to play/finish. I didn’t add games that are ongoing with no real end. I wonder how many of these games I can kick off my list…

I Beat Unravel!

CbkNwj0UEAApLgY

To be clear, I didn’t 100% it. I don’t think I can. I really enjoyed this game. Even when I was stuck on the same puzzle for 30+ minutes, I was enjoying myself. There were certain mechanics that I felt were kind of cheap ways to increase the difficulty, but that could just be because I suck at these kinds of games.

CbkDottUsAEz7Tu

This screenshot is from a level called, “The Last Leaf.” It’s the penultimate level in the game. From and aesthetics and mood perspective, it was by far my favorite level in the game. It’s very linear and there are no secrets, but it seals the bond you feel for Yarny. (There were a couple of spots that had cheap difficulty increase mechanics, though, so I DID end up swearing a lot.)

Cbj2HIdUcAAu6Wn

Here’s a cool thing. When Yarny walks along the keyboard, it plays keys on the keyboard. They have no relation to the keys he’s ACTUALLY stepping on, but we won’t hold that against anyone. That would be too nitpicky. LOL

CbkNF_oUYAAEc3L

Once you beat the game, you can continue and go back for any secrets that you may have missed. (I missed a LOT of them.) The main room of the hub is now sunny and the flowers in the vase aren’t wilted anymore. Oh, and the photo is complete. Beating this game really gives you a nice warm fuzzy feeling. I love warm fuzzies.

CbkNlP9UcAEarIW

I loved this sentiment. This is the entry you get after completing the final level. More warm fuzzies.

Today in Game/Nerd News:

The renovations in the Nintendo store in New York City are complete. I can’t wait to take my husband there when we go on vacation in May. He’s never been to NYC. Look at all those Pokemon plushies! ❤

There’s a very nifty new trailer for ADR1FT, releasing next month on the Oculus Rift. I’m really excited about VR gaming although I’m worried about motion sickness.

Tonight on Twitch:

I’m sorry I didn’t make it online last night. It would have been cool to stream the ending of Unravel. But I got stuck at work and by the time I got home, it was so late that I just wanted to sit around in my pajamas and play uninterrupted.

I’m hoping to start at around 8 or 8:30 PM Hawaii time tonight. I’ve got stuff to do after work: wine tasting, picking Fire Emblem Fates for my husband, and dinner. So this start time is a best guess. As for WHAT I’ll be streaming… Right now I’m debating between Fallout 4 and Shadowrun: Hong Kong. I’m leaning toward the latter, but who knows… I might choose Bloodborne for no good reason. 😛

Come by and say hi!

3 More Levels of Unravel!

I was on a roll last night! I actually got through three levels in about 2 hours. I think maybe I’m getting better at this game. When I first started, I was averaging one level in 3 hours. I’m getting better at recognizing and patterns and identifying solutions. Hooray for having a human brain! (Mmm… Neuroscience…)

I even remembered to take a few screenshots (plus my goofy ass face):

CbenBW4UcAAj7n_

This frozen, icy environment was gorgeous. The level itself involved a bunch of black crows that insisted on snatching Yarny up and carrying him away to parts unknown, though. It took me a LOT of attempts to get past them. I have to admit that as I played through those sections of the level, I felt like they were just a cheap way to make the level more difficult. In the cases where there’s nothing to hide behind, you have to time a little jump JUST RIGHT to throw the bird off. Too early or too late and it’s FUCK YOU! Again, though, the change in the music during the more stressful moments definitely added the right ambiance.

I forgot to take a screenshot in the level called, “How Much Is Enough,” but with regard to puzzle design, that was probably my favorite level so far. Yarny has to interact with machines and electricity in very cool ways. He also had to use light to send cockroaches scrambling. Ew. They really reminded me of the flying “B-52” roaches we have in Hawaii, but Unravel’s roaches don’t fly. THANK GOD. (These giant flying roaches are really a thing here. I’ve lived here pretty much all my life and they still send me screaming. LOL)

CbexYPVUEAEONzR

The last level I tackled was a snow level. I wanted to stay there forever. The snow was so pretty and how it would get stuck on Yarny’s body was SO CUTE. The only thing missing was that crunch. You know … That sound snow makes when you walk on it? I could walk in snow all damned day, listening to that crunch. I remember when I was in college in the Berkshires, I used to love the sound of the crunch as I walked while the snow fell silently around me. The silence of the falling snow was almost tangible. It was so beautiful and weird. Snow, or more specifically, 4 seasons, is another reason why I’m planning on moving to the mainland. I live in a paradise of eternal summer, which absolutely has its merits, but Autumn, Winter, and Spring are so beautiful, too. I hope you don’t take them for granted… Fun fact: Hawaii DOES have snow, by the way. I don’t live on that island. (Most people don’t. Of the 1.4 million people in this state, only about 185k live on that island.) And you’d have to go to the summit of an ACTIVE volcano.

Cbewni2UUAAecnw

Today in Game/Nerd News:

Sega is giving away three games on Steam if you’re willing to sign up for their newsletter, which I’m sure you can cancel later: Streets of Rage II, Binary Domain, and Condemned. I like free stuff.

Fushigi Yuugi has been added to Crunchyroll. This is one of my favorite anime series of all time. Probably because of my husband. When he and I first started dating, I told him I liked anime. (Keep in mind that this was during the time when anime fans would send blank VHS tapes to fansubbers and wait for them to SNAIL MAIL the tapes back to them!) He said, “Have you seen Fushigi Yuugi?” I hadn’t. So he gave me a tape with a few episodes on it and said, “Check this out. It’s my favorite. Call me when you need more.” Now if you’re familiar with this anime, you know that EVERY episode ends in a pretty crazy-ass cliffhanger. So I’d watch it and call him for the next tape. And of course, I kept calling him. What a sneaky guy! 😀 It totally worked. It’s too bad you can’t really do something like this anymore… Ah, romance. ❤

So, if you know me at all, you know that I HATE strategy games. RTS, Tactics, Turn-Based… All of it. But holy shit, I REALLY want to play the Master of Orion remake! They got awesome voice actors!

Tonight on Twitch:

I’ll be very likely getting a late start because I have a part time job after my day job today. This typically only happens once a month. I plan on playing more Unravel. I think I have 3 more levels before I finish the game… Come by and say hi! 🙂
